Return to the idea, even when the page moves.
EPUB reading often changes with the screen, type size, and reading application. A useful bookmark therefore includes more than the page number you happen to see. Keep enough chapter and passage context to find the idea again in the same edition.
Use this approach when you read long books across sessions or devices. It is especially helpful when you expect to change reading software, adjust typography, or revisit a passage after a long gap.
Keep the title, author, and edition or file version with your notes. Two files with the same title may have different structures or revisions.
Use a chapter title, section heading, or a short locator in your own words. Pair it with the reading app’s bookmark so you have a second way to understand the position.
Your stopping point changes as you read. A reference bookmark points to an idea worth returning to. Name the latter by purpose instead of treating every mark as a reminder to resume.
Try one representative book in the destination reader. Check whether the text, navigation, and your chosen way of retaining notes still meet your needs.
PUT IT INTO PRACTICE
“Chapter 4, section on urban shade: explains why afternoon exposure matters” remains useful when your display settings change. Keep that note beside the book’s identifying details, then use the reader’s own position marker for quick navigation.
EPUB supports reflowable and fixed-layout publications. Bookmark and annotation behavior depends on the reading application; do not assume that moving the book file also transfers a particular app’s reading state.
Reference: W3C EPUB 3.3 specification.
Keep additional chapter or section context, particularly when layout can change. A recognizable textual location makes the note easier to recover.
Check your reader’s export and transfer behavior. Treat the book file and app-maintained notes or positions as separate things until you have verified otherwise.
