Keep a reading position and a trail of ideas.
An ebook bookmark can mark where you stopped or where an idea lives. Those two jobs deserve different treatment. Keep the current reading position easy to resume, while giving lasting references the book and passage context they need.
Use this workflow for study, long-form reading, or books you consult repeatedly. It works best when you first decide which marks are temporary and which ones need to remain understandable months later.
Record the title, author, and edition or file version you are using. If you compare books or formats, keep their identifying details separate.
Let the reading application handle your immediate stopping point where appropriate. Avoid naming every useful passage as though it were another unfinished session.
Label an idea by the question it helps answer. Add a chapter, heading, or other locator that will still make sense outside the current screen layout.
Inspect the application’s supported ways to retain your notes. Test a small export or move before relying on it for a larger reading project.
PUT IT INTO PRACTICE
Instead of leaving a mark called “Important,” record “Chapter 6: distinguishes correlation from a proposed mechanism.” That note tells you what to look for and how the passage relates to your reading question without reproducing the whole page.
Reading position, annotations, and the book file may be maintained separately by the application. Keep track of all three when changing tools, and check which details a transfer actually preserves.
Identify the edition attached to each note. When a book changes, recheck the relevant passage rather than assuming the old locator still points to the same material.
The EPUB guide focuses on format and reading-application considerations, including layout changes and a practical compatibility check before moving files.
